This week saw a brief return of Jupiter’s alarming digestive symptoms. Very upsetting. Rather than immediately rush Jupiter to the vet, we decided to give him a Pepcid, switch his diet to white rice and boiled chicken for a few days, and see what happened. He got better pretty quickly. And he LOVED his boiled chicken and rice. (We’ve been feeding him commerical food, and he’s been pretty indifferent to it.) It was kind of fun to cook for Jupiter, since he liked the food so … Continue reading
I recently found the following video on the Facebook page for Sean Casey Animal Rescue. Jupiter knows his basic obedience. But after watching the little Jack Russell in this video do laundry, make the bed, wash windows and, yes, even fetch slippers, I do have to wonder, is Jupiter really earning his keep?

As you may have noticed (or not noticed), our blog was on hiatus for a couple weeks. Jonathan finally got the blog going again this weekend, but now it’s time for me to get back into the swing of things. Here’s my excuse (and Jonathan’s too): Jupiter was very sick for a couple weeks, and it was horrible. So horrible that we just weren’t in the mood to write a dog blog. While Jupiter was sick, the thought of writing a blog post immediately made me … Continue reading

Last week, media magnate and former presidential candidate Stephen Colbert filmed one of his most important interviews to date (for a dog blog). His conversation with John Bradshaw, author of Dog Sense, a book about the “new science” of understanding dogs is quite enlightening. And not because Mr. Bradshaw offers some important bits about how we should treat our dogs vis a vis what dogs have come to expect — you can skip that drivel. About 3:15 into the interview, Colbert drops the bomb: Dog Socialism. … Continue reading

It’s been a while since Part 1 of our groundbreaking dog fitness series, but we wanted to make sure everyone out there had ample opportunity to try out the exercises we suggested back then. You don’t want to run a marathon without stretching first, the experts say (though a triathlon is probably ok). We may not be running any *marathons* with our dogs any time soon, but here in Brooklyn, it’s a bit of a hike to our favorite dog bar. Unless we want to pay … Continue reading
This past Sunday I witnessed two sort-of gross, sort-of funny dog incidents. First, I got up early to take Jupiter for his morning walk. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and everyone in Cobble Hill seemed to be out with their dogs. When I turned the corner on Warren Street, I was greeted by two women and three dogs (two beagles and a Frenchie). When the woman with the Frenchie saw Jupiter, she happily welcomed us, “Someone else to join the party!” Jupiter began … Continue reading

The past couple of days notwithstanding, I think we can finally say that Spring has sprung (assuming it doesn’t snow later this week). When you wake up on a day like today, you feel a virtual gravitational pull to grab the ol’ leash and walk your dog as far as he’ll go. It’s time to break out the frisbee and the portable water bowl and head to the park (or, if you’re in a major urban center like us, the closest approximation to a park). Of … Continue reading

I would really love to help this sweet girl find a home! As someone who looks at Petfinder ALL THE TIME, I know that China has been a resident at Sean Casey Animal Rescue for a very long time. (Like, over a year.) So she’s more than due for a good home. According to China’s Petfinder profile, she’s a challenging dog. Sounds like her leash skills and basic training could use some work. However, when we looked for a dog at Sean Casey I had a … Continue reading

At first, we thought Mishka’s act might be fake — an elaborate hoax or just a ruse pulled by a joker with Garage Band and a mic. But then we saw a clip on Regis & Kelly… and then CBS News… and now even William Shatner is getting into it. It’s undeniably cute, if not a tad creepy (in the aliens have endowed us with super-human intelligence and we’ve turned against our human masters sense of “creepy”): She even has her own Facebook page and dropped … Continue reading
